I was once clawed by a Black Bear years back and was lucky enough to escape further injury. Was wondering if anyone on this board has ever come face to face with a polar bear? Although being stung by a yellow jacket may have more serious implications ya never know!

You don't get bitten - you get eaten. A camper got attacked by one some time ago. The pix of the consequences are somewhere on the web, but it's very, VERY graphic, so I don't care looking for them. Polar bears don't see you as trying to take their food. You ARE their food.

So I guess no feeding the bears with beef jerky? But then again if they ate me I would have to wonder about their bad taste!

Polar bears will actually actively hunt humans. Once they get it into their brain your dinner, unless you are adequately armed, you're toast.

I've seen 15 or 20 over the years here in Kuparuk. Have had to chase a few off location with a 966 loader. There have been some incidents in neighboring fields but nothing directly in Kuparuk that I recall.
About 5 years ago I met a member of a whaling crew in my home town that had stopped in the local bar trying to sell baleen. He had an awfull walking posture. After a couple beers I finally broke down and asked him what was wrong. He told me a spine chilling story about how him and a couple other fellow hunters had built a wind break type wall around thier tent out of large chunks of blubber, and in the middle of the night a polar bear had basically attacked thier tent. The bear took one large bite out of his glutimas maximus...and another out of his side right below the rib cage and above his hip bone. He did show me the injury to his side. It was amazing the chunk of flesh he was missing. Fortunately for him the other hunters were able to locate a rifle amidst the mayhem and darkness...and were able to shoot the bear before it killed him.
