I lived north of Haines for 8 years. I have recently been offered a summer job in tourism within Denali or in the southeast (Juneau-Ketchikan). Does anyone have suggestions on what to do. I am hoping to land a full time job by the end of next summer and stay. I want to move back. I am now on the east coast...boo hoo. Just some idea's would be nice.

Juneau was rainy & cold when I was there this summer, but the scenery was beautiful & folks were friendly. I loved Ketchikan. It reminded me of coastal Maine. It has a nice downtown & cozy neighborhoods. Misty Fjords is breathtaking.

I suggest you get ahold of Bob Blockus. He can give you a good insight into the kind of jobs your looking for. He usually posts on the Anchorage sub forum.

One thing to consider is the length of the season. SE AK will go to the end of September. I don't know about Denali.

Denali doesn't last too much longer as they get most of there customers off of the land portion of curise tours. Usually the 1st or 2nd week of October and most of that time is spent closing stuff up for the winter.

The Denali Park is a lot bigger and depending on what you are doing, you will see more.

The weather is mostly nice in the summer months at Denali, the weather in SE is rain most of the time... But if you lived in SE already, you know that.

If you are coming up to visit for a few months and work, I would pick Denali, when you get a day off, you can travel the road system a bit to see more of the State, in SE you are pretty limited to the local town you are in for the days off. It takes a lot more money to get out of town to see elsewhere.

If you don't have a car, you can take the train South to Anchorage/Seward or North to Fairbanks and they leave from the Park. Depending on what company you work for, you may get to ride for free or a heavy discount. There is also a bus system that goes both directions in the summer.

Most of the businesses have good living quarters for the employees in Denali also, don't know what SE has.
