So I was just breathing some fresh air and contemplating the backs of my neighbor's houses when it occured to me it's time I asked the question that's been in the back of my mind for a while. Here goes... Is Alaska truly the "kindest" state in the union? The locals I've met down here make it sound as such. So can a guy with a "green thumb" get things figured out with the help of some local horticulturists and decent greenhouse far enough away from the neighbors?

No need to reply on this thread... send me a message or link if you feel so inclined. Thanks for your help in advance. If I'm a bit too obtuse I apologize, this has just been the best place I've found to pick up on some truly local knowledge.

No worries Granny... grew up hunting and fishing. My first deer hunt ended about a 5 min. walk from the house. Yeah, I read Ms. Metal... super funny stuff. Unfortunately her friends have been moving into WA, OR, and even ID for a looooooong time in droves. It's not even like home anymore. Maybe you missed... or didn't? The reference to the KINDEST, GREENEST state in the union.

Default Gardens, you bet

If you're in the Soldotna area they have a great Cooperative Extension Service office. I took their Master Gardener class a few years ago. Only had to pay for the printed materials like $20. Then last week I went to the Garden Club meeting and the topic was root cellaring. They shared recipes for currants and making raspberry booze. Met a guy who lives off the grid and heats his house and greenhouse with wood. Has apples and pears in his greenhouse. He uses a Central Boiler, solar panels and 8 batteries 350 lbs each. There was a lady there on acreage that showed her potato harvest from last year, a bin about 8x10, 3 foot high. She gives potatoes away.

Wow, that's one for extreme greenhouse makeover (if they've invented that show yet)... good to know somebody's done it though.
