I've driven the Lower 48 from border to border east to west, south to north, and one regrettable diagonal (Miami to Seattle)... I've had a few run-ins will the local cops or staties knocking on my window while I was catching some zzz's at a rest stop. For some reason, in a lot of states, they're under the impression that you're only supposed to stop to pee and stretch your legs. It's a whole different story once you're in Canada in Alaska.. the cops would rather see you sleeping at a rest stop or turn-out than in an accident or ditched on the side of the road. Most places, even in the lower 48, where there is 100+ miles between you and civilization the cops cut you slack for overnighting as long as you're not squatting.

I'd recommend staying at a KOA or RVPark while you're still in the lower 48. Milepost has listings for camgrounds and RV parks along the Alcan if you need one... but rest stops are usually ok for the night

Sat radio don't work once you get to about Distruction Bay in Canada, they do in SE Alaska. When my daughter moved from Sitka back to Fairbanks, she paid for a three year subscription and only got about eight months out of it. It worked in Anchorage on a few of the high spots, but not enough to buy one, not at all in Fairbanks....

Default Sirius worked up through Anchorage

We had a temporarily installed Sirius rig (magnetic patch antenna) which worked pretty well on a road trip from New Mexico up through Anchorage. It started getting picky about when we got to Kluane lake, as you noted. When we repositioned the antenna to a more ideal position on the roof, it worked for us the rest of the way with some dropped areas. The most trouble was when we were driving through the deeper parts of the canyons between Glenallen and Palmer.

I suspect that a lot of your success or failure with it is antenna dependant, we're really on the northern fringe of their coverage area. From what I hear, the "mushroom" shaped antennas generally work the best, though they're not exactly the most aerodynamic or attractive.

The Ipod idea has a lot of merit, unless you actually LIKE trying to listen to Canadian country stations on AM through a fog of white noise static.

Question, where was that ideal spot for the antenna? I'll confirm the dead areas mentioned and that Anchorage was a dead area for the most part. I also suggest you bring your CD collection, which we forgot to grab on our last trip. Oh, and get a car charger for the ipod.
