I am back from my work with the Yukon Quest and finally finished my blog/trip report on it if anyone wants to read it.
It was a fairly mild year. Yukon Quest 2013 « Alaska, The Madness

It is mowing season again…

Seeing as I still haven't gotten an app accepted, I am about to get some houses.

I really just wish I wasn't so prone to bronchitis.

I got a single house for this year. Everybody else got a contract with major mowing.

This economy sucks…

Has the Northern Lights been any spectacular this year winter season in Alaska? I saw them a few times up at Denali National Park back in Early Fall 2009.

So we're down to one airline now. Grant Aviation is pulling out on Friday. It was nice to have an alternative to Era, especially since they're so quick to cancel flights in the winter. Weird how they're handling this, though - really short notice. I just heard about it yesterday. Everybody's scrambling to get any vouchers they already had either refunded or exchanged for Era tickets. My brother-in-law is in town visiting, and they sold him a round trip ticket yesterday, knowing full well that they weren't even going to be here when he goes back to Anchorage next week. Another friend flew out last Friday on Grant, and wasn't told anything about needing to transfer her ticket to Era in order to get back.

Not sure about it now but it used to be that Valdez was an ERA town. Everybody loved ERA and everybody loved to have that second carrier but mainly because it added some competition and kept the fares down not because they were really using the alternate much.

Well, Alaska doesn't fly in here, so I guess it was an Era town by default. That's like saying it's a Safeway town. We don't really have another choice. Everyone I know prefers Grant. They're just friendlier and more reliable. I can't count the number of times Era has cancelled flights and stranded people while Grant was still flying. Alyeska and Crowley fly all their people Era though, which certainly stacks the deck against any competitor.

I used to work for MarkAir in Valdez, shortly after the spill. It's difficult for another carrier to get a foot hold when the big folks have agreements to use ERA. They don't really care if the fares increase due to a one-carrier market. It seemed there was a lot of support from the community but it was more just to keep the fares low. Nice to read the preference for Grant.
