Nephler,
Understand I'm not an expert but it looks like a moose rub. If you were to go up to it there would probably be some hair in the sap...
they rub their antlers to strengthen their neck muscles and rub the velvet off of them.....

That's what I was thinking, but don't they normally do that later in the year to rub the velvet off?

Agreed absolutely! The Internet can be worse than any other addiction. There is also a real life besides the internet.

Yep, usually around Aug-Sept I believe. If that is real fresh then could be they were eating the bark. I know elk do that when the snow is deep....

That may have been it then, eating the bark. All of the trees like this were quite freshly scrapped and/or eaten. But then again, there really isn't any snow left over in the Jim Lake area.

I'm not addicted to the internet, I can quit if I wanted to. Everyone hates quitters so I hang around a lot.

Our boat is moored in Homer that I am getting ready for the season, we are by the "Time Bandit" of the Deadlest Catch fame. It is amazing how many people keep showing up to get their picture taken by it. Heck, they could be making a killing selling T shirts and giving tours!
