As a native Alaskan, I hate to see what oil is doing to my friends, my family, and my home. The reality is surreal and eye-opening, and I don't want our children living this way.
Just because we had to live with it, doesn't mean we have to expose generations to come to the same punishments we had to endure.

Maybe they could close Prudhoe Bay and put a big honkin nuclear reactor in it's place?

What punishments did you have to endure from Prudhoe Bay? lol

I voted for Obama, but I am all for drilling in ANWR and Prudhoe Bay.

I know several Native Alaskans that are working a 2 and 2 and still make $130k a year.

Please tell them that oil is bad.

I think you all read right past what that concerned native from Barrow was speaking about !!

Ukpeagvikmuit = A person from Barrow !

I understood exactly what they meant. Last October a federal Judge Ordered the Oil companies to pay out over $250,000,000 to one person here in Barrow, It has been in litigation for 20 years. They still refuse to pay this individual the rights from stealing his Fathers land.

The Oil companies have done a lot of harm, to the animals, the environment, and the traditions and culture. now you can post links to studies and such that show this is not true. But we have seen first hand what these off shore rigs are doing to the animal migration paths from thumping the ocean floor.

We've all lost something.
I don't deny that oil exploration has changed your environment, often to its detriment.

But were it not for oil royalties, you'd be breaking trail without the benefit of snowmachines.
no blue foam to sit on,
no fuel for your stoves,
no wood for your sleds,
...it would be a bleak world indeed...

I won't pretend that mining is harmless. I live not too far from a dirty goldmine. But I do accept that the benefits outweigh the damage done, and there are new technologies that will allow less invasive exploration and extraction in the future.

For thousands of years, the tradition has withstood the test of time. many of these people wish .. to revert back to the old ways. but that is not possible,

Breaking Trail while walking is no big deal. but I bet if we had a crew of white people down there and paid them 1,000 a day in 40 below weather.. they would not last 2 hours and all they would be doing is complaining !

Any of you are free to revert back to the old ways at any time. I'm sure 40 years ago things were way bad...but in this day and age, at least the company I work for...takes great pains to respect the culture, environment, wildlife etc. And yes...there are many villagers working here that benefit greatly from having work.

I don't think you'd have to fight...just resume living as your ancestors did. Completely off the land. No lights, no milled lumber, no motor vehicles, no phones radios or TV, no fridge or freezer, the list goes on and on.

easy to complain, easy to accept change but very hard to go back to what they think was a better way of life!!!
