Would like to know what the typical type of crime is in Kodkiak, AK. Also, during the Crab Festable what steps are taken to keep people that are attending safe.

Actually my Granddaughter wants to go to Kodiak with her friend and her friends aunt. They have family that live there, and they would be staying with the family during the Crab Festival. I was wondering if the Crab Festival was geared toward families, or more to the general public. Worry person that I am, wondering if it is pretty mellow, or if 'all you know what' happens during that time, and most families stay home.

We do have a member here in Kodiak. I'm sure he'll chime in today.

I havent been to the crab festival yet but to my knowledge its safe, geared towards tourists, and one of the biggest public things that goes on here. There is virtually no crime in Kodiak.

Crime? We have crime here? Unaware of that fact. Actually there may be a few "petty" break-ins but nothing serious. As for the Crab Festival...there's never been any problems. Picture your small town America, back in the day of Auntie Bea & Opie on the Andy Griffith show - that's pretty much here, just not exactly your Caucasian majority NOR your typical SUNNY weather. However, as with anywhere, if you SEEK out trouble you'll find it.

Thanks for the info and the nice things you all said about Kodiak. I'm feeling a little more positive about letting my granddaughter go with her friend. Everything I've heard and read about Kodiak has been positive. Thanks

I've never been to the crab festival. I may have to fly over and check it out. Might be a photo op or two.

Be careful, there isn't as many crabs as there use to be, but you can still catch them....

The Crab festival is a great way to see small town Alaska, as is the Valdez Winter Carnival, the Cordova Ice Worm Festival and a host of other small Alaskan town blowouts. Every town has it's charm! Even Anchorage has the Fur Rondy, although it isn't anything like it use to be years ago when I was a kid... ok, a lot of years ago...
