We're going to do the Flag stop train and getting off at one of the stops. Curry sounded like a neat place to see and camp. I was wondering if anyone here has been there or to any of the other stops on that trip that goes on the Alaska RR from Talkeetna to Hurricane. I also thought about Canyon. We want to just camp and fish. We know that we can only go on a Thurs-Sunday.
We're also game for stopping somewhere else on that trip if the fishing is good. We're looking at the 2nd weekend in June.

LOL Well it's not a normal tourist attraction,YAY. Google it and you will get some wonderful history about the place. We are planning to carry stuff with us on the train, just the basics. We're only going to do 2 nights. We don't care if we see another person while we're there. We will be taking our gun for sure, fishing poles, etc. and 1 dog. We are also going to take our SAT phone in case something was to happen and we needed help. But 3 of us now are ETT trained so we can handle the minor stuff or at least maybe be able to keep control till help would come.

I never saw anything from the train except a sign that said Curry.

Sounds about right from what I have read.Do you remember anything about any of the other places like Sherman,Canyon, etc?
Curry is suppose to have a couple of old buildings away from the tracks but really not much more. What really drew us to this little adventure was some years back in earlier 2000-2006 we were watching a show, think it was on PBS. Where these people lived remote and their only transportation to town to get anything was the train. It showed them getting off the train and getting on. It said some of them lived several miles from the tracks and walked it like monthly during the summer or something like that. It showed one family even. It has always interested us and so we decided we want to hop on the train and camp out somewhere along the trip. We don't have a set destination yet and the RR people said we can just pay the conductor when we get a better idea of where we will be stopping.

When i worked on the arr in the earley 50s curry had a 100 room hotel, several cottages for employees, shops and other bldgs but all are gone now, only a sign left canyon had a closed section house and a short distance up the tracks was a trail to miami lake, about a mile. Sherman had a section house and large natural open area across the tracks but last i knew there was a house there. This whole area was nicely wooded with mostly birch trees. Realey nice country but lots of black bears. Of course this was along tie ago [60 yrs] so its hard to say what its like now. The indian river flows by canyon

DECADES ago (early 1970's) we took the train to Curry! It was back when you could still Homestead - as I recall we were looking for a 5 acre parcel. We spent 2 nights camping out and looking for our perfect spot. Turns out we had to walk a fair distance before we got off of railroad property (wasn't smart enough back then to have figured that out ahead of time - lol!) We never did stake any holdings on that trip but it was a wonderful experience! Curry was a flag stop back then and we were the only ones getting off there. We flagged the train down 3 days later and will remember that trip for a lifetime!
