I'm afraid you're out of luck there. Most all smaller places will be even more expensive. The least expensive place is likely Anchorage, because of the population size. The only saving grace is that salaries can be higher to offset the higher cost.

The peninsula is quite similar to mid and southcentral Sverige. Except you have much bigger trees! Lot's of lakes rivers streams on the peninsula.
I think our prices are pretty close to yours other than maybe fuel costs. Most of the towns on the peninsula are fairly small and are on the one main highway system. As mentioned earlier...the economy is not real good here right now...so jobs will be harder to find and what can be found will not be the best paying.

Växjö is south of Jönköping. My wife is from a village about 20 kilometers south of Jönköping which is the same latitude as Kodiak Island. Stockholm is more around the same latitude as Anchorage or the northern peninsula. You guys get the Atlantic Current which gives you a milder warmer winter in the south...but northern Sweden around Karuna is every bit as cold as interior and northern Alaska. I was just at the icehotel in February and it was more than -30° F there.

The winter weather on the peninsula varies depending on if your along the coast or the interior of the peninsula. Naturally it will be warmer alonog the coast.

Another thing...are you coming for a 90 day visit on a visa waiver? You could stay longer with an employer sponsorship, or maybe if attending a college. What you don't want to do is get yourself in trouble by overstaying the 90 days on a waiver. You could be denied re-entry into the US for up to 10 years if you get caught!

Ive also thought of moving to the northern parts of Sweden, ive spent alot of time up there and i love it.

But Alaska seems far better then northern Sweden its just a dream of mine to go there.

I think my hopes of getting over there any time soon seem to fade. With those kind of prices i need to save up some money before i can even considering leaving. And that could take a while considering i dont have much money to put away each month.

Hopefully in a few years this economic crisis have turned around and it will be easier to find a job in Alaska, or anywhere for that matter.

Great info on the legal immigration, dont know much yet about how to get into the states, ive heard about green card so ive googled it yesterday but didnt get much wiser from it. Gonna read up on the 90 day visit, maybe i could get get a "vacation" from my regular work for a few month and get over there and check it out before i acctually decide if i wanna move there. But in order for that to work i still need to be sure i can get a job while im down there and pay for most of the trip that way. I read about the rental prices in a few towns and it seem to be a minimum of 800 for a decent place, dont even pay half of that where i live today so it would tare my econemy apart without a job.

Id like to know if Alaska is as peaceful as it seems. One of the reasons why i want to move from Sweden is what this country is getting worse everyday with crime in general. All the places i lived in Sweden its the same exept for the northern parts. People and getting robbed, raped, beaten and killed everyday over here and things just seem to get worse by the day. I dont want that **** in my life, i want a calm place with friendly people.

What do you love about Sweden that you dont have in Alaska? And how come you know so much about Sweden?

I've been going to Sweden every 3 months for the last 2 years. I met and recently married a wonderful young lady from just south of Jönköping.
What do I love about Sweden? Everything. The people, the scenery, the history, the food, the trees, the weather, the trains, I can go on for an hour. My mothers side of the family immigrated from Sweden in the 1890's, and in June I'm flying my Mom over as she has located some distant relatives in Gränna, that still live on the farm her great grandfather lived on before immigrating.
The very one thing I do not like...roundabouts! What is up with all the roundabouts?

If your a Swedish citizen you can travel to the US on a visa waiver which will be good for 90 days max.

My wife has been to Alaska twice for 90 days each time. She had no problem coming here. We are currently processing with the National Visa Center and hoping she can have her green card within the next couple months. She is still in Sweden through all this as she would not have been able to work, drive, enroll in a college...basically anything until processing was complete.

Alaska has it's moments. You'll not be escaping crime coming here...and as far as I can tell...it's worse here than there. There are peacefull areas...the peninsula being one of them...but we have crimes like drug's, theft, DUI's, vandals, even rare murders on occasion also. The smaller communities will be more well behaved than the larger towns like Anchorage or Fairbanks. But they are not totally crime free.

hey Rance...just heard from our friends in Sweden and they are coming to US to visit us next month!!!! Too bad they can't kidnap Hannah and bring her with them!!!! They can't wait until we move to Alaska so they can come visit us in AK!! Before we settled on moving to Alaska they wanted us to move to Sweden (they still do)!!! I wanted too but Hubby didn't (he wanted Alaska!)and here's Jocke who wants out of Sweden!!!

The Interior is mostly cheaper than the Southeast or Southcentral, but, colder and you said you didn't want that. I bought 20 acres near Manley for $11,000. No taxes either. But a very, very extreme climate, and really no services around, so there's a reason the Interior is sparser populated and cheaper...

Apart from the gun laws and socialist tendancies of the government, Sweden strikes me as not such a bad place although I've yet to ever visit. All of far Northern Europe seems pretty nice, not so crowded like the Netherlands, etc., and more nature around...

I'd suggest you visit for, say, a few months, and see what you think. It'll be expensive but, not as bad as immigrating to a foreign country and learning you don't like it, and immigrating here can be very difficult and expensive, unless you sneak across the Southern border illegally...you may find the culture shock, distance from people you know, etc., to be too much...or maybe not and you'll know it's for you...
