We are planning to drive up to Alaska in about 5 days. Do they allow you to bring house plants through Canada?

Has anyone brought their house plants through the border?

Thanks

Food Plant and Animal Inspections

This link says you gotta declare them........and they're subject to being pitched if they're a variety Canada doesn't like.

My own thoughts....#1 they're gonna take up A LOT of room I would think. We sorely needed the room for other things when we came up.

#2 You know how cold it is gonna be going through Canada this time of year? I can see the plants all flat and unhappy after any time the vehicle is parked and not running.......

Many, many years ago I came across the border with a plant. It was not allowed. While talking with the agents I realized it was the soil that was suspect in this case. So I ended up taking cuttings, keeping those and getting rid of the soil, bringing the cuttings across. This was in the '70s, though, so it may not be relevant at all.

But that may be an option for you if it is disallowed.

Have a great trip!

Back in the 70's I had some house plants I felt attached to. I drove up from Texas to Colorado in January, carried them in and out of motel rooms, but once left them too long in the car during a restaurant stop and some succumbed! My point being that it was kind of a pain in the neck and that trip didn't even involve a border crossing. I would recommend re-homing them.

In the winter, you have the added issues of subzero weather. Your car may be toasty warm up front, but you can hit as low as -60 at times in the NW parts of Canada and Alaska. The back interior of your car packed with gear, may be well below freezing and house plants don't normally survive in those temps...

Be sure you have passports and if bringing pets, be sure you bring their vaccinations list, they always ask if the animal has rabies shot and want proof.
