Well a close friend of mine and I are looking to move into Alaska. All we are worried about is work and finding somewhere to live. We are both about 20, both have a high school diploma or GED. We're great with manual labor, and pick things up pretty quickly. Any advice for getting up there and getting settled in? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

The job market isn't much different here than anywhere else. It's in a downturn and with the cost of getting up here there might be better places for you to look right now. Not trying to dissuade you but might look at it from a business standpoint.

I appreciate it. I have a strange feeling we're going to try regardless, it cant be much worse than what we have going here.

Life is nothing without chance, but the reality here is a high cost of living, it's winter if you don't have the money to find a place to live, and in a downturn where some places are starting to move up. Just think about it and good luck.

Drive for Kingcab in Fairbanks and meet 100 people a day and take home 150$ a day --- in other words theres income--- Russians drive some of the cabs--- they got it on you? NOT.

Its safe pretty much , just be prepared . It will pull ya thru til the big enchilada lands in your lap, and its kinda fun--- meet lotta chicks 2

You could try going king crab fishing and might get on TV. Seriously though a GED in the 21st century is not going to cut it you should get some kind of training, skilled trade, education, etc. The job market is beyond cut throat right now (and actually has been for quite some time now). The last time I remember when jobs were plentiful was in the mid to late 90's since about 99 or 2000 it has started getting cut throat, in fact the college graduating class before me in engineering made graduation shirts that had a list of classes stacked in a way so that certian letters lined up to spell unemployed. I would start with gaining a trade of some sort so you have a fighting chance, otherwise your going to be going from job to job doing hard work and getting marginal pay if you can find any work at all. You want to make yourself as non-expendable as possible.

You'd be better off waiting until spring and maybe get on with a cannery in one of the coastal towns.

You can start looking here for anything available.

You can look here for seasonal type jobs--lots of people get started this way and these companies are more likely to hire out of staters. Most are just seasonal but that isn't a bad way to become familiar with the state and maybe line up winter work. Most provide housing.
