Do to the economy I do not wan't to go into college and waste 4-6 years on a degree if I can't find any jobs in the field. So I ask, what skill or degree would be very useful up in Alaska? What is the main job market made up of?

mechanical skills (ASC certified mechanic), engineering, medical field (nurse, doctor, etc), bush pilot (WITH your own plane). Just depends on what you want to do, job openings and unemployment are pretty much just as bad up here as the lower 48 so if you dont already have a good job up here or know someone your probably going to have a hard time.

Diesel Mechanic, and the others mentioned above will work. Bush pilots don't make much money here just starting out.

Mechanic of some type. Plumber, Electrician, Skilled Medical Field. Don't waste your money on an engineering degree. Like Lawyers they are a dime a dozen.

Yes, oil and gas. I know of someone's son who just graduated and got a $80k job here. I don't know if someone else could do the same as he went to UAF and could have gotten some internships that led to the job.

Electric work will likely require you going through a union as an apprentice.
