So, quick recap, my hubby and I just moved up here in Feb. to fairbanks. We really want to see as much of alaska as we can while we are stationed here. But my question being, where are the more scenic places you get, while driving. I know that a lot of this place is inaccessible without a plane, but thats not exactly an option. Just wondering if you had opinions on must see places. And if you feel a place is really just a Must-see no matter how you have to get there, tell me that too. Just mention the alternative transportation XD Thanks guys

Do the mini loop. Drive down to Cantwell and hit the Denali Highway and cut across to Paxson, great drive. Head north up the Richardson Highway back to Fairbanks.

Why is flying not an option? One of the things you'll soon enough come to realize about Alaskans is that we fly. We have more airplanes and more pilots per capita than just about anywhere. And we are mobile, which often means flying is the only way to go, and we do! We fly in private planes, in jets, on mail planes, and everything in between. Scheduled flights go everywhere that people live, and charters go everywhere else if that's your bent.

From Fairbanks you've got some really truly great possibilities for sight seeing, both on the road system and flying. Drive to Circle. Drive as far north as you can handle it on the Dalton. Definitely drive to Tok and then on down as close to Anchorage as you can deal with, including, if possible a trip all the way to Valdez back to Anchorage and down to the Kenai and then up the Parks highway back to Fairbanks. There just isn't much of any way to describe the scenery on the trip from Fairbanks to Tok to Anchorage. You'll have to see it to believe it.

But that is the part of Alaska that is in many ways just about exactly like any similar stretch of miles in the Lower-48! There are a few really special places you can drive too, but it ain't nothing compared to what you can fly to in Alaska! Nome, Dillngham, Bethel, Kotzebue, Point Hope, Barrow, Kaktovik, Ruby, Aniak, McGrath, Galena, Anaktuvuk Pass, Elim, Shaktoolik, Shishmaref, etc etc etc. There is nothing like any of them in the Lower-48. It's more adventure, and more education, than you can begin to imagine for even one of those places.
