We spent some time last week in the Lake George area. It is my hope that in the next 3 years we can retire either there or Queensbury. I do have a concern about healthcare in the area. Both my wife and I are relatively healthy for our age but we do have conditions that are being managed. Nothing exotic but we do require annual or semi-annual checkups for our conditions. Where do the local residents of Queensbury/Lake George area go for their medical care? To me, it looks like the nearest large hospital is Albany Medical Center. That looks to be in excess of 40 miles away. I guess I would like to throw in Saratoga Springs as we also went through that area as well this past week and really liked it there.
A second question as well: What are the supermarket choices in Queensbury/Saratoga Springs? I only saw a Price Chopper in SS and was wondering if that was all there was. Thanks.
We moved to Saratoga, two years ago. Have not had good experiences finding decent doctors in the area. There is a hospital in Glen Falls. We travel three hours to NJ and have stayed with our physicians group there. There are several times we went to the Wilton Medical Arts Clinic in Saratoga. They are well-equiped with lab, xray and imaging capabilities. I needed an orthopedic surgeon and found an excellent physician in Albany. Unfortunately we have yet to find someone who will give a good recommendation for a doctor, including health professionals.
Regarding supermarkets, there are Hannaford's, Super Wal-marts and Price Chopper. There is a BJ's wholesale club in Saratoga and a Sam's Club in Latham. We miss Shop-Rite and Costco.

Thanks for your reply. That's a long drive for a doctor. Do you know any people who have gone in the other direction towards Burlington for doctors/hospital? I always thought Albany Medical center being in the state capitol would be a decent alternative. My dad saw doctors there about 25 years ago. Thought they were decent then.

Yes, driving to NJ is a long drive, three hours, but the Summit Medical Group in Berkeley Heights has one stop shopping. A large campus with any specialty you might need, all computer net worked, labs, CT scan, etc. all in one place. Spouse had catastrophic illness and I can't say enough about them.
We set appointments up and rarely have to wait more than 10 minutes passed appointment time. We get physicals, lab work, xrays, EKG, visit doctor and are on our way in less than three hours.
Albany might have doctors that would be suited for you, we tried the Endocine Group and were dissatisfied as at the second visit, only seeing a PA, were told they were going to schedule surgery. Without seeing the doctor? No thanks. So drove two hours south and doctor at SMG disagreed with surgery.
Upstate is not the only place prone to poor medical healthcare/doctors. Friends in DE, PA, etc. are not happy either. Probably due to shortage of young people going into the medical field.

I think that is becoming the norm all over. Here in FL, I see PAs routinely at 2 out of the 3 doctors I go to. I don't see that getting better in the coming years.

I have to agree with you. Guess we will continue to travel to NJ, except in emergencies.

The hospital in Glens Falls is excellent, prerhaps the best one in a place that size in the US.
I don't think you'll have a problem with medical care, we certainly haven't had that as an issue.
Glens Falls Hospital is a decent hospital and Saratoga Hospital is also very good. Troy has Samaritan Hospital, and I go to a great cardiology group there. My daughter goes to St Peters in Albany for ped. cardiology. So besides a narrow specialist, you shouldn't have a problem finding adequate care.
There is also a Super K mart in the Queensbury area. Aldi's are in the area also, can't forget that one!

Thanks for the info. I had an acquaintance also give a thumbs up for St. Peters. The hospitals where I'm at now are less than 10 miles from me. I will have to adjust to the fact that they may be 25-45 miles away at worst.
I see that there are several Hannaford grocery stores around that area. Are they any good compared to the rest?
