Go to the racetrack for breakfast and watch the horses workout over bacon and eggs, NYRA puts on a great presentation every morning. Then stay for the races in the afternoon. You can get a spa treatment at one of the many natural hot water mineral bathes. White water rafting is also available nearby on the Hudson river. Great restaurants on main street.
My parents live there and we go to the racetrack for breakfast, but we bring our own. You are allowed to bring in food or you can grab coffee and muffins there. Then take it upstairs and pick a row in the grandstands for the workout with commentary. We love the kids museum for little ones (under 8, I would think). There is also a free tour of the barns at the track (by trolley), but little kids are bored by it.
Wow, just take the kids to the horse racing museum. They will love it.
