Hello all,

I am exploring ideas for a short vacation and Lake George was mentioned as a possible promising trip. I am looking to vacation for about 5-6 days in mid April. I had some questions-

1. What is the average weather like in April up near Lake George? I know it will not be very warm, but will it be good enough to enjoy some water sports, hiking, etc?

2. What are some recommended places to stay? I looked on the Lake George website and they have so MANY places to choose from, just wanted to see if I can narrow down my choices.

Any other input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well when I search for average temps I find 59 high, 35 low.

You could hike and do some boating.

I live in the Capital District but spend a lot of time in the Adirondacks.

I'll be honest with you, I wouldn't recommend Lake George in April. Lake George is fun in July & August, during peak season. But I'm not sure in the spring. I don't even know if everything is open. I'd definetly check on that. I'd hate for you to make the mistake my husband & I made going to Maine one April. It was like a ghost town.

We have a lot of snow right now, more than in recent years. Lots of times the Adirondacks will still have some snow in April. The other thing you should consider is black flies. Once the warm weather hits in the spring the flies start to breed, and if it's damp and warm, the flies can be horrible in the woods. I mean like in your eyes, nose, ears. As a kid when I went up North w/my parents we wore bug hats. Now I don't go up until late May.

I hate to be a downer because I do love the Adirondacks, but during blackfly season. Any other time of year it's wonderful. What about going south a bit if you are looking for a vacation in April? Or even somewhere not in the woods/mountains you won't have the blackflies.

Maybe someone who lives in Lake George year round can give you a better idea of what it'll be like.
Good luck.

If you like rain and cold, then Lake George is your place. It doesn't get hopping there until at least after Memorial Day. The water stays cold even in the beginning of summer so I wouldn't plan on getting into the water. Perhaps you can find a resort with an indoor pool. Bring lots of warm clothes and day hikes should be fine. But if you're looking for any sort of nightlight at that time, it'll be pretty dead.
