Default Best area in North America

Perhaps the best area in all of North America. Clean streets, lakes, mountains, culture, plenty of nightlife and the best horse racing on the planet.

We bought a house last year in Saratoga (Schuylerville) because we loved everything about the area: friendly and helpful people, the beauty of the area, the quaintness of downtown, access to shopping, cultural events, housing prices. We had a honest and meticulous builder, who went above and beyond what was expected.

Pros: really livable small city with everything you could want nearby. Great shops (both higher-end chains and independent), good restaurants, bookstores, coffee shops, etc. Close proximity to the Adironadacks. You even get horse racing and gambling if that's your thing. Great golf and outdoor activities in town and close-by (State Park, Saratoga Lake, etc). People who live there generally care about their city and are forward thinking. Good schools.

Cons: traffic gets crazy...during horse racing season and beyond. We avoid Saratoga during track season unless we're going to the track, because the town is overrun. (on the positive side, however, I know people who rent out their homes during that time and make a LOT of money). Good mix of people, but you can get some really snobby folk and surly entitled college students. Costly for the area... if you're coming from a high cost of living area, you won't really mind, but otherwise it may seem steep in comparison to the majority of the Capital District. Growth...there are a lot of new, expensive, condos and developments going up within and just outside the city, adding to the congestion.
