Hey guys. Im looking to buy a home in upstate ny, preferrably around albany area, about 3 hours from nyc. Im looking for a nice middle income area with a low crime rate, a nice neighborhood but affordable as well. Albanys prices are very affordable. Any other local areas and surrounding cities with similar prices??

It's going to get said sooner or later because whenever anyone asks about great places to live in Upstate NY it is mentioned....Saratoga Springs. It is a really nice city, very historical, very clean, growing population with a great outlook for the future. It's about 45 minutes north of Albany, so it's a little further from NYC than you said you wanted...but it is a really nice city.

Default It all depends on what you're looking for...

If there's one really great thing I can say about the Capital District, its that there are a huge number of choices when it comes to living styles and standards. If you want a small city with all the amenities, there's Saratoga Springs...its pricey for the area but offers a bustling college town with shops and dining galore. If you like suburban / soccer mom kind of neighborhoods, convenient to all sorts of shopping (grocery, Sprawlmart, malls) Clifton Park or Niskayuna may be your thing. If you like neighborhoods where you can get a really nice historic home at a great price, but may have to deal with some higher crime rates, take a look at Schenectady. If you like rural areas (maybe want some land but don't want to break the bank) my personal opinion is to look northwest of downtown in western Saratoga County...towns like Charlton & Galway. I have to admit that I don't know Rensselaer and Schenectedy Counties that well, so you might want to seek info from others on those areas. We rented for about a year when we moved here and went on drives every weekend to look at all the different options.
