A family member of mine was recently the victim of a driveway paving scam. This relative is approaching 80 years of age and lives alone (in the Albany/Schenectady/Troy area.)

The scam is that the company convinces you that you need a certain amount of work done. They then convince you that you need to pay cash up front and then they take off with your money.

This particular company has been cited before and according to many sources, members of said company have been jailed for these offenses. My relative has contacted the authorities, but without an exact location of the offenders, there is apparently nothing that can be done.

My family member is out several thousand dollars, and does not know where to turn. I would like to help and have contacted the local news. They said they cannot help unless my family member is willing to speak on camera. Victim is understandably concerned that public display will result in an undesirable outcome, as company knows where victim lives.

Has anyone else experienced such a scam? If so, would you be willing to discuss it on this forum or via private message?

Thank you.

This has been a huge problem in the Capital District in the past few years. See two news stories by the Times-Union consumer advocate here and here
The newspaper has gone through some changes with their Advocate column recently. I think I read in the paper that the new reporter in charge of the column is Chris Churchill, but the newspaper's web site is a bit outdated and difficult to navigate, so can't confirm. In any case, the contact info for Mr. Churchill is (518) 454-5442 or by e-mail at cchurchill@timesunion.com.
He might be able to direct you.
