Feeling a little homesick...

Where would you say the best places to buy land (10 acres or less) within, say, a two hour radius of Albany would be? We'd like something close to some mountains (and water, too, if possible) with a definite town center and small town feel, but close (ish) to a more populated area for shopping, a bit of culture, etc. Proximity to a decent-sized hospital would be great, as would a good library.

Feel free to ignore any of the above variables if you know of a really cool place, but are afraid it might not quite fit our criteria. We're definitely open to possibilities. Thanks!

This is a pretty good site with ALL real estate by county; not limited to the Realtor's site.
New York Real Estate: Find NY Homes for Sale.

Thanks Ellwood--great site!

It seems like everyone's suggesting the northern towns (which I love). From looking at Ellwood's site, it seems like the prices are fairly reasonable, too--so, big plus, there. Also, my husband's work is in engineering, so with all the new growth developing around Malta, he might have some luck finding work nearby. Awesome!

I've heard there's a Whole Foods somewhere in the area now????? Definitely another thing worth coming home for.

There's a Whole Foods in Latham. As a transplant I would be thrilled for a Costco; unfortunately I either drive to Springfield, MA every couple of months or NJ when we are down there.

Trader Joes is on Wolfe Road in Colonie.. not Whole Foods. I heard Whole Foods is now looking to come up this way in the near future but they are not here yet..
