Yes the Adirondacks are hills relative to the Rockies. When this is your daily view driving home from work you get a bit spoiled.
What is wrong with Colonie and Guilderland? Did you look in Bethlehem? Albany, Troy, Cohoes, Mechanicville and Schenectady are cities and are going to vary.

The Adirondacks are just older mountains, but I don't know about them being hills.

I've seen both. The Rockies are certainly pretty. The Adirondacks are just prettier, but thats just my own aesthetic at work. The Rockies are certainly higher, but that doesn't count for much. Sounds to me like you came here with your mind made up to hate the place, and you then managed to meet your expectations. If you couldn't find anyplace "decent" to live in most of the places you mentioned you clearly weren't really trying.

I like Saratoga Springs a lot, but it is crazy overpriced. If you have the kind of money to live in Saratoga I would think Loudonville is the better option.
