We're considering relocating from MD to Cohoes. My husband is looking at a job there, and I am an RN. I am very intrigued at the prospect of being a part in a small town revitalization. We love to support local economy, artists, agriculture, and have a long history in participating in various poverty/justice initiatives.

Is anyone familiar with the happenings in Cohoes? Not so much any 'real estate development' but grass roots development?

I would love to begin a conversation about it, if anyone lives there and has something to share!

Actually, the Music Hall has been revamped and has been a part of a slow, but steady revitalization. Home page

So, hopefully it continues. Here's information on the city: Cohoes, NY Directory | Tourist Attractions | Shopping | Dining | Entertainment | Albany | Cohoes | New York | NY

Another small city you may be interested in is Watervliet. I believe that only the village of Kenmore has more population density out of Upstate NY communities than Watervliet. Watervliet, New York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rensselaer may be another to consider: Rensselaer, New York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I thought being Liberal was what NY was all about?

No worries. Turns out we won't be heading your way after all. I did think you have a beautiful town though and wish you locals the best!

There may be other parts of NY that could work for you. You may even be able to start something elsewhere where your interests would be appreciated.

I think some of it is in terms of the music hall and some buildings being converted into apartments.

It has great loft apartments in the old mills, although not particularly new. Then there's this place I just discovered - the Foundry for Art Design and Culture. And a brewery and brew pub may be opening there soon. (It was originally planned for Ten Broeck in Albany, but was voted down. Grrr.)
