Hi! We are potentially looking to purchase a house that is zoned for the BKW school district. I've had mostly poor reviews on this district from the few that I've spoken to in the area. I've also done a few preliminary searches online that aren't boding well. Can you give me your take? Is it good/bad and why?

Note: I have two boys under 3 so not in the school system yet but shortly.

Default Bkw

I think what happens is that BKW gets compared to neighboring districts like Guilderland, Voorheesville, and Bethlehem, which far outrank BKW in all categories. BKW is also smaller and as a result, does not offer as many sports or after school clubs and activities. It is a rural district and therefore pulls students from socioeconomic-disadvantaged areas. It looks like you've already investigated the numbers, but numbers don't always tell the whole story. It wouldn't hurt to do your own personal visit to see what the school campus is like and speak to a school representative. Bigger isn't always better and some families prefer the smaller overall class size that BKW offers.

Agree with this. I have a friend who worked in the District for many years. She says it is an interesting mix of rural folks, hippie types, professors' kids, and working class people. I think a large part of its relatively poor scores is that it is not as wealthy as the neighboring towns. Keep in mind that the district is much smaller than places like Bethlehem or Guilderland. This has its pros and cons. Guidance can spend a lot more time with kids (especially important in the high school years), kids and families are close knit, teachers are more likely to get to know the whole kid and not just the scores. But there aren't the variety of course offerings and if your child is a little off-the-wall it can be harder to find a group of friends just because there are fewer people to pick from.
