Hello all,

My son was recently accepted to a college upstate and we figure this is a good reason to finally pack up and leave. We're coming from the Bronx, from a once nice neighborhood that has denigrated into a terrible area with drugs and hooligans everywhere, so obviously I'm looking to move us to an area where there aren't people hanging outside of the building and doing drugs all the time.
Currently, a 1 bedroom apartment in this area runs for about $1500 so I'm hoping we can find something that is either better at that price or cheaper altogether. Albany area but further up/down isn't out of the question as long as we get out of here! Looking to rent, not but. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Tim

What else are you looking for in a neighborhood community? How close to him do you want to be?

Check out the "Mansions of Delmar" site online. They're a rental development in Albany county just outside (south) of the city. All townhouses with nice amenities inside and in the development. Rental rates are in your range and there's lots to do in the area plus shopping. Very easy ride in to Albany and any of the colleges. Good luck.

I'm not looking for anything particular like night life or parks, just somewhere with decent people who don't party and run wild all hours of the night. Anywhere in or around Albany is fine as his school is in Cobleskill.
I'll check out Mansions of Delmar for now, thanks again!

If you want to be close/closer, perhaps something in Rotterdam or Scotia could work. Parts of Niskayuna or the Upper Union area of Schenectady could be possibilities. It may depend on your budget though.

There are a few sections of the cities up here that are as you describe, but most of the Albany area is fine. And for a $1,500 one bedroom apartment around here, you will get luxury! The Alexander Apartments cost about that. I don't care for the location - they are in an office park and next to the highway - but they are safe and have a lot of amenities. Tri-City Rentals is a decent company with several different types of developments in the region (townhouse, towers, urban, suburban). Most are in very good neighborhoods. The Tivoli Park apartments are in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood, but the property is kept up well. My daughter had a friend who lived in one of the units, and it seemed well-maintained, if a little outdated. The apartments abut a larger urban nature preserve.
