Cohoes is that bad? Really? This has to be a joke considering the city has a crime rate below the state rate and has had 2 homicides since 2005.
It is very run-down. And for a city of 16,000, the crime rate is still somewhat high. Not the worst, but not the best. Like I said, I would visit Cohoes and maybe live in it, but would rather live in nearby Troy.

It has a crime rate below the state and national crime rate. So, I don't know if the rate is somewhat high.
Typical blue collar, former mill town that has seen better days, but has seen a little bit of revitalization in recent years.
My family and I are thinking of moving to the Capital District from NYC and are hoping to find a diverse, walkable community. We have spent a lot of time in Saratoga Springs (2+ months every year for the past 4 years), and while it checks a lot of boxes on our list (walkable downtown, decent schools, great library, good restaurants, cultural/arts programming), it just feels too small, lacks diversity (racial, social, economic) and still seems car-dependent. Are there areas in the Capital District that might work for us? Any ideas would be appreciated!
Pretty much everywhere up here is going to be car dependent. I live in Albany and I see some students getting around by bicycles but only in the summer time. No way could you live without a car here in my opinion. Especially when all the fun is in Saratoga, Troy, etc.
Perhaps downtown Troy? The Stockade neighborhood in Schenectady? I don't know about the schools in those areas though since I don't have kids. Those are really the only walkable areas in the region I can think of minus some areas in Albany.
