Just browsing through some of the recent posts, I see this subject and closely associated options have been beat to death, but perhaps I can throw something out there that's slightly apart from the pack.

I've been working for an environmental consulting firm for the past three years, extensively travelling in my work, although I've recently been laid off and rather abruptly at that. I'm doing a little reflection and considering a career change. I've worked each of the last three spring/early summer months in the Saratoga area, so I'm quite familiar with that immediate area. I really enjoy it and the proximity to the Adirondacks. I actually am not that familiar with Albany and the metro area, despite my proximity.

I'm considering a relocation to the Albany-Saratoga area (currently residing in Iowa at the moment), but have no job prospects lined up and I've only recently started looking. Would it be a suicidal move (relatively speaking) to pack up and relocate without first trying to land something? I'm not opposed to working food service / retail while I get on my feet as that is also something I have experience with.

I'm also considering other areas in New England. I've spent a substantial amount of time in southern Maine as well.

Thanks for any input!

I wouldn't move anywhere without something lined up, unless you have a substantial amount of money saved up to live off of until you land something.

What other kind of work can you do or are you willing to do?

If you could get in with the state, you'd be golden. That's hard to do, though, and takes a lot of connections.

The job market in Saratoga can be either seasonal, or more small business-oriented. So if you're looking for something more corporate/public sector-based, you'd be better off in Albany. And if you're planning on living in Saratoga and commuting to Albany..... Well... don't do that. I mean, you can. Lots of people do it. Lots. Of. People.

Thanks for the replies. I'm well aware of the nightmare that the Northway can be. An hour + to get from Niskayuna/Colonie to Saratoga in rush hour. Fun stuff.

Thought I mentioned some credentials it in my initial post but I must have been on another train of thought. My BA is in Finance and Real Estate, I have some OSHA certifications (HAZWOPER etc), and years of retail/restaurant/sales/customer service experience. I'm 27, I don't have much tying me down (other than a truck payment and student loans), and I'm pretty open to working whatever is necessary until I get on my feet and am able to start looking for something more fulfilling. I'd say, excluding moving expenses, I've got about ~5 months worth of living expenses saved + a couple of rainy day funds stashed around.
