Hi, my husband is starting a new job in Niskayuna, NY. We are moving from MO. Its my husband and I and a toddler. What neighborhoods can you recommend? We would like to be close to parks, restaurants, and markets. Looking to rent a house for around 1200-1500 range.

It may be difficult to find a house in that price range. What kind of area are you interested in? Do you want a walkable location or more of a suburb with larger neighborhoods/lots. There are several neighborhoods and apartment complexes off of the Rt 7 corridor which would be nice. Latham (which is part of Colonie and in the North Colonie school system) is pretty convenient to the rest of the capital district and has some nice very neighborhoods. They have several older (post war) neighborhoods with smaller homes that would fit your budget. Niskayuna/Schenectady are slightly isolated - Rt 7 goes E/W to from Niskayuna to Latham or Rt 5 heads down to Albany. I90 (toll) is the only highway and connects Schenectady to Albany. Clifton Park is a popular family oriented suburb along the I87 corridor, you would take local roads into Niskayuna. There are several apartment complexes to choose from.

The Capital District is a commuter area, so if you are willing to drive 15-20 minutes you will find anything. There are parks, restaurants, museum, play areas everywhere. Troy has a wonderful Farmer's Market, Saratoga has a great Children's Museum, restaurants, the track.

If you want a walkable area, you may want to check out Albany or Saratoga(although these would mean a longer commute). I would avoid Schenectady, the city is trying to revitalize itself but there is still work to be done.

Perhaps Old Niskayuna near the Upper Union area of Schenectady may work. Upper Union Street - Schenectady, NY

Think carefully about this. The winters are extremely cold there, much colder than even other parts of the NorthEast.
