OP, have you been able to narrow down or find a place that fits what you are looking for?

You are also going to discover that the people there are nowhere near as happy, friendly, and outgoing as they are in Atlanta.

Fortunately for you, this will be a temporary assignment.
We lived in the Bay Area for almost seven years prior to living in Atlanta. While people are very nice and friendly here, we are looking forward to being out of the south. Nice and friendly could also be called nosy 😉

I've found a couple of property management sites and have been checking them and Craigslist daily. It really seems like we may have to choose an area based on what is available within our budget when we get there. We have ruled out Troy and the drive to Saratoga Springs is more than my husband wants to do. Tbh, I am overwhelmed.

Are you still looking for a rental home or are you open to other rentals?

I have a phone interview tomorrow for a job in New Hartford NY. They told my hr manager it was an hour from Albany but Google maps shows 2 hours. I am going to interview regardless, but is there even a point in considering this as an option? On map it looks like the best halfway point would be Amsterdam.

It is about an hour-hour and a half or so, as it is a suburb adjacent to the southern end of Utica.

Amsterdam, Gloversville, Johnstown, Little Falls, Fonda/Fultonville(they are in the same school district), Canajoharie and maybe even a suburb like Scotia could work. Scotia allows you to stay in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area, while being closer to that potential job, but you may like the other communities in between.

In the winter would the route from any of these towns be extremely treacherous? 45 minutes of freeway drive is no problem, but I'm not sure about the snow. And thank you again for all of your help!

There is a NY State Thruway Authority that has plows that generally clears snow in a timely manner. So, the Thruway will generally be fine in the winter. Keep in mind that while there can be quite a bit of snow, there is infrastructure in place to clear the snow. So, life goes on during the winter.

Out of the communities mentioned, which one do you think would fit what you are looking for?

Also, have you looked for employment within the Albany area? What kind of employment are you looking for?
