I'm a mid-20s professional who's lived Uptown for a year. I'm looking for a new place and found a nice apartment in the Mansion District. I'm not that used to a super urban setting, so I know it would be a change-- perhaps a good one?
Does anyone have any experience living in that area? Is parking atrocious? Are the accounts of crime downtown real or trumped up? Any practical wisdom would be much appreciated.
Had to wiki Mansion District. The words urban blight and neglect continues in some areas would have sealed the deal for me. But I admire your spirit. Why not; go forth young man and make the world a better place.

Don't do it. Unless the price is good and the apartment is super nice. I've heard mansion district is kinda cruddy area and the statistics don't prove otherwise. I actually thought about moving there when I relocated to Albany but the apartment was priced poorly for area. I've driven past there also and it looks kinda run down.
I would say look at lark, center square, or pine hills. If you work in downtown area, I guess mansion district would work. Also as long as you aren't mindless like walking around drunk and or alone at night, you should be fine even in mansion district. I live in a kinda crummy area close to lark and haven't really experienced anything too bad yet other than being pestered by panhandlers a lot.
