I moved to Albany at the end of May. I live in a nice residential area (near New Scotland, between the two hospitals). I don't have a car, and I've been walking most places. My roommates have lives and jobs, and I'm just interested in learning what's around and finding things to do. I've gotten involved in some meetups, but I hate doing things alone and really don't know *where* I am compared to where I want to be.

I've managed to get most of what I need to do done by mail, and I go grocery shopping and do laundry once in a week, but would be interested to know what else a 50+ laid-back, low key, extroverted person could enjoy that doesn't require a great deal of money or a specific knowledge of the area.

Thanks!

Get a bicycle. Albany is relatively bicycle friendly.

If your looking for local activities and events , I'd check out these websites:
Keep Albany Boring and All Over Albany

Alive at 5, is a free concert event held on Thursday's on the Albany Riverfront. Washington Park has free plays outdoors at the lakehouse (Park Playhouse). You should be able to find the schedules online and a quick bus trip should get you there just fine.

Other than that, there are plenty of churches around if that's your thing, plenty of restaurants and bars (allot of nice choices on Delaware Ave, Lark Street and Madison Ave) coffee shops, the library etc. On Scotland Ave near the hospital I believe there are a few also that you could easily walk too, other than that you most likely will have to hop on a bus.

Unfortunately, I'm not in my 50's and don't even live in Albany (my parents do) so I can't speak directly to your post... but hopefully something I listed may help. Best of luck!

They have a lot of free activities for both members and non, and if you want to join it's only $50 for the first year. It should be about walking distance for you.

Also the Albany Public library has loads of things for adults and almost all are completely free.

You must be one of my neighbors because I live on New Scotland between the two hospitals too. Sucks that you don't have a car but I agree with the other poster who mentioned getting a bicycle. The trail right behind New Scotland is paved and good for biking. I think public transit could be good for you too. The bus goes up to Saratoga I think. I'd check into that. More to do there than in Albany.
