There is the Courtyard/Residence Inn and the Jefferson/Clinton Hotel in the Armory Square district of Downtown Syracuse. Also, the Hotel Syracuse is being renovated as we speak. There's also the Genesee Grande and the ParkView Hotel not too far from Downtown on East Genesee Street.
The OnCenter is tied in with the War Memorial Arena and at the time of completion of the OnCenter, the Hotel Syracuse was open. There were plans for a hotel to be tied to the OnCenter, but that fell through.
True, they have opened in the past couple of years, but the OnCenter has been open for over 20 with no decent hotel nearby. The Hotel Syracuse was a disgusting mess of a dump and no meeting/conference/convention planner in their right mind would ever have used it for their attendees. Short of gutting it to the studs including plumbing and electric, fumigating it, and starting pretty much from scratch, a facelift will not turn it around.

I believe that the Jefferson Clinton has been open for a while(about 15 years or so).
Also, in regards to the post about air connections, Albany has lower rates than Syracuse or at least it did in recent years.
From L.A. To Albany, you're probably going to fly into Newark then from there, fly into Albany International.
The connecting city depends entirely on the carrier. Newark would be for United. AA would be PHL or ORD. DL could be ATL. But I honestly don't see ALB becoming a large national convention city. Regional, by all means.
Also, SYR is one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. To fly in and out of, ALB is considerably less expensive.

Interesting, but not surprised about that last part outside of a select few flights/carriers.

I used to have to travel to SYR regularly for business. Flights into SYR (~$600) were always considerably more what they were into ALB (~$400) and EWR (which I could usually get for around $225). Sometimes I'd luck out and get SWF for under $150 r/t if I was willing to travel weird days (fly in Tuesday midday and home Sunday mid afternoon).
Personally I think the flights into ALB were held lower for the politicians. Same thing with flying into DCA. Although Harrisburg messes up that theory, as it's another ridiculously expensive airport to get in and out of.
