Thank you. After looking at both, it seems like more to do in and around New Palz, so this is now high on our list of places to stop.

Thank you.

I hope you enjoy it! New Palz should be beautiful in October. Make sure to check out Mohonk Mountain House. Even if you don't stay there--wonderful trails.

Why wouldn't you recommend Plattsburgh?

Our family stayed in Plattsburgh for a few days on our way back from Montreal. Granted, this was about ten years ago. It was depressed and gloomy. The one good thing about it was that it was cheap. So...as a central location to travel to and from--esp. in and out of Canada, it might be a good choice. But as a destination, in and of itself, I couldn't recommend it.

I also had a number of friends who went to college there. (Again, this was a number of years ago, so...) Let's just say, no one was eager to stay in Plattsburgh once they graduated. And most of them did remain upstate (mostly in and around Albany). So it wasn't a NY thing.

Many places in the Raquette Lake area are closed after Labor Day. Old Forge still has many places open.

You really need to pick an area. Saranac and Lake Placid are several hours from Raquette Lake. There's far more to do and see in Saranac and Lake Placid than Raquette. If you're looking for changing leaves, they'll be gone if you're going in October. The ADK is the first place they change and fall in NY.
