Hello! I am moving from a very small (less than 2500 people year round), isolated mountain town in Montana to join my boyfriend in NY in July. He is currently in Albany but has only been in the city for a few months so we aren't too sure which neighborhoods or areas to look. Still need to be in the Albany area for work, but would like a bit more of the small town feel. I've visited Albany twice now so I am somewhat familiar with the area, he is currently within walking distance to downtown. Any ideas for us? Would like to be able to have some nice views or other outdoor access somewhat closeby too.

THX!!!

The good thing about the Albany area is no matter where you are the country areas are only a short drive away. How far are you willing to commute? What is your housing budget?

Hi MrJones17, thanks for your reply.

We are willing to commute 40 minutes max with a budget of around $1000 for a 1 bedroom space.

Ravena, south of Albany, appears to fit and you can get to the Catskills within an hour:

Yeah Ravena could work. Many of the small towns west of Albany can work for you most likely. Even Stillwater might work too, although I haven't been there in forever and it could have gone down hill. I have a couple friends in Greenwich which is a small town up north and they like it. Lots of farms but it's a bit further than 40 mins from Albany.

New Scotland out east of Albany could work too. Friend of mine lives on the top of this mountain over there and the views are incredible. I think it's in the town of Berne? Could be completely wrong.

Hi bremily,

I hope you both enjoy Albany! Based on your background and where you'd like to live, I would highly recommend looking into Altamont. It is about 20 minutes west of Albany, has a great small town feel with beautiful old homes, and even a small town fair in the summer. It's also right at the base of the Helderberg escarpment, with a very short drive to nearby state parks, and beautiful country roads with views of the northern Catskills.

Cheers, and good luck with the move!
