Wondering which county in the Capital region has the lowest taxes, both school and property. Schenectady, Albany, or Saratoga county? Is there a big difference between the three counties? School district doesn't matter so are there any to stay away from due to higher taxes?

They’re all a little high. Check the potential school districts.
Lotta times that’s where they get ya!
But yeah normally, the more developed, the higher the taxes.
All the counties surrounding Albany/Albany County are gonna be kinda high to very high.
If you look here, this map shows that Saratoga County has the lowest median rate out of the major counties in the Albany metro area(Schoharie County has an even lower median property tax figure): New York Property Taxes By County - 2023

Schoharie is primarily an agricultural county. Very little services and creature comforts, and scarcely populated, keeps the taxes down.
There’s really not much there. At all.
The more developed counties will obviously have the higher rates. But that can vary wildly by school districts.
The direct Albany metro counties can have wildly varying rates because of the schools.
So that’s definitely something to dig into deeper when house hunting.

So, looking at the median home price in relation to median property taxes can help those search get an idea of rates. However, rates only tell one part of the story, as a county may have lower housing prices that contribute to having a higher property tax rate.
