Hello Everybody ,

So I moved to Albany from Pakistan a week ago. I am a guy in mid 20's and wanted some advise on how safe the city is . I am currently living on new Scotland avenue near Albany Medical Center (Dana Avenue )to be specific. I have been told that my area is relatively is relatively safe as compared to other parts of the city . I wanted to know if my area is actually safe to walk during day or night time. There has been shootings on Central Avenue in a club a few days ago. I would also like to know if walking beside taking a walk on lark street or alongside washington park is okay when the sun sets.

You are in a very good part of Albany. I use to live near where you live and could walk around at all hours without any problem.

Generally speaking, you want to stay away from anywhere north of Central Ave. You also don't want to be walking around Lark Street/Center Square after dark.

The Second Avenue area down in the southeast corner of the city is also pretty rough and I don't think I'd want to be around there at any time, day or night. Parts of the Delaware Ave neighborhood can be sketchy. I don't recommend walking around there at 2am but it definitely depends on what streets you're on.

Safest neighborhoods are on the west side of the city.

Pine Hills has the area known as the college ghetto which you may want to avoid just because there's a lot of loud college students. Parties and all that. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a war zone though.

What is wrong with the Center Square portion of Lark Street?

I'm saying after dark I wouldn't want to be walking around there alone. Just because of all of the riff raff that occurs on Lark. Typically only on weekends, but still, if the OP is really trying to stay cautious and safe. He is from out of the country so I'd imagine he'd want to play it as safe as possible. I know I would if I wasn't a native of the area.

I see what you are saying, as Lark is a long street that goes through a range of neighborhoods. I was wondering if there have been some things that have specifically occurred in that area of the street, given that it is a popular neighborhood.

When people typically refer to Lark they're talking about the portion of the street between Washington and 20. Nothing crazy as of late has happened over there from what I've heard or seen, but in general that's typically where things happen if they do happen. Or of course the portion that extends into Arbor Hill.

Since you lived in the same area I thought i better ask. There is a group of african americans that hangout in the park. I was having a walk , got called twice by one individual but ignored him and continued my walk. Its kind of weird getting approached by people. Never happened in Malaysia or even Pakistan. I am thinking these are homeless . Are they usually dangerous?

The homeless people aren't usually dangerous. Some are genuinely good people and others have mental issues. You did the right thing by ignoring.
