Is that what you are looking for in a town/community? If so, are you open to other communities as well?

A house my wife inherited is there. We are aware that it's in the country.

I live in the west side of Columbia county, Canaan is due east along I90 right before the border with Massachusetts. It's a very pretty area in the Taconic Hills with 1 decent sized lake, Quechy Lake. The hills get taller just east in MA, with The Berkshires. There are a few nice waterfalls in the area, Bash Bish is pretty famous, scenic and well photographed, Google it. Hiking and biking is a popular pastime in this region.

Canaan itself is pretty quiet, in fact most of the county is quiet but not in a dead kind of way. There's plenty of things to do year round. There's skiing very close, right now. The Canaan area is beautiful in the fall, with the foliage change. There is an art scene, the town of Hudson has several galleries. We have a large art exhibition here in Kinderhook in the site of a former elementary school. There's a sculpture garden in the county as well as Olana, famous for the Hudson Valley School of painting. There are several art museums in Massachusetts like MOCA and the Rockwell plus a couple of college art museums.

There's a good food scene in the county because it's very agricultural. Canaan is near Chatham which has a year round farmers market, a fresh bread bakery and a classic single screen theater, The Crandell. There's a summer stock theater too and the county fair is there the week before Labor Day. Summer is nice and comfortable in the area, Tanglewood is close by and a great summer destination.

As rural as Canaan is you'd still be close to the Mass Pike to head to Boston, just over 2 hours. The Taconic Pkwy takes you to NYC.

I just retired and we're staying put in this area, it's scenically beautiful with a lot of local charm plus several charming, artsy towns in the area (I haven't even mentioned activities south of here in Dutchess county). We love the proximity to NYC and Boston too. Hope this helps.
