Is this a matter of just trying to decide between the 2 or are you going to be in both of these cities?
With this said, Syracuse has multiple districts/neighborhoods where you could do this(Armory Square, Hanover Square, Tipperary Hill and to a lesser degree, Westcott Street and the Crouse-Marshall district).
I have a free hotel room that I have to use both cities are close
Is it for a certain hotel or do you have options in either city? What makes Armory Square in Syracuse appealing is that you have a couple of hotels in the district. https://www.armorysquareofsyracuse.com/
You have a couple in the Crouse Marshall area, but the bars skew younger due to its proximity to Syracuse University/SUNY-ESF: https://crousemarshall.com/
You can walk to either Hanover or Armory Squares from there. For Hanover Square, you could just walk a few blocks down Warren Street and to Armory Square, you can go a couple of blocks down Warren, then take a left onto Jefferson or Fayette to Armory Square.

Academy Park in Albany is right near Lark Street if I'm not mistaken. That's where most of the city's nightlife is. It's also a really quick cab/Uber/Lyft right further down Washington Ave where there's some stuff too. Less rowdy bars and places to eat are on New Scotland. But Lark Street and Pearl Street are where you'll find the most to do as far as bars go. Pearl Street Pub is popular. If you really wanted to venture out, you could take a 45 minute cab to downtown Saratoga. Now that track season is pretty much done, it'll be less crowded but still a fun time.
