That particular neighborhood really isn't too bad. A lot of people who have lived there for a while. The problem is if you go down 2nd St. (or 2nd Ave. I forget what it's called technically), to get to Troy, you're going right through Lansingburgh which in some parts looks more like a third world country. It's extremely depressing. If you're ok with that then I guess that's fine. As far as school district goes I assume that's in the Troy public school system.

Look further out in the east part of Troy for a house. Off Pawling Ave. is good. I think it's called the Albia neighborhood. Further down Pawling you'll hit Wynantskill which is a bit more rural and spread out but still close to Troy/Albany.

On a side note, OP, but the Lansingburgh portion of Troy(it’s northern most neighborhood) and portions of adjacent towns go to Lansingburgh Schools. I believe that Zillow listing is in that SD. https://data.nysed.gov/profile.php?instid=800000039593

My daughter's old boyfriend lived off of Grange Rd in Troy. Brunswick schools. Nice area and convenient to downtown Troy. There's a lot for sale near his house.

The whole region is safe IMHO. You have to remember that the metro is sprawled out. So while Albany itself has about 100K people, the whole metro is near 1.2M. So yes, with near 1.2M people there is going to be some crime, but for the Capital Region it is a small percentage compared to the number of people that live here. I would almost bet that any similar sized metro area would be worse crime wise.

Your individual chance of crime is slim to none, and I say this as a 48 year old life long resident. Even the higher crime areas are not nearly as bad as people make them out to be on this forum.

The weather is not as bad as people make it to be either. It's not like the upper Midwest, it doesn't really get that cold, and it moderates here. For example, I just got 22 inches of snow at my house a couple of weeks ago. The past few days its been 50 and raining and the snow is gone. The somewhat cold spell is generally only for a couple of weeks in January and early February.

I love spring and fall, but summer is excellent in this area. It only gets really hot and humid for a couple of weeks, and you have so many options on what to do. You can go from the mountains to the ocean beach in a day trip.

As a side note, I also think that the Capital Region is one of the last places in the country where you can make your own way no matter who you are. It's not like Buffalo.

East Greenbush, Averill Park and Clifton Park seemed nice. However, I also can't shake the feeling that I should look for work in North Carolina Research Triangle Area although I do not work in tech the area seems to be booming right now.

If I can find a decent home, 1800 sqft minimum in a relatively safe area with decent schools, for 200k or less that would be great. I am willing to drive within a 30 minute radius of Troy. I am even willing to live in modular/manufactured community if the people are nice and friendly. I actually prefer rural to urban living myself

Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks for your help.

there is your answer: "the area seemed old, depressed and property taxes seemed high, even for someone who lives in Illinois. East Greenbush, Averill Park and Clifton Park seemed nice. Factor in the brutal snow falls, cold, and horrendous traffic conditions to the old, depressed housing stock and the area has seen better times. Apparently they had a record 22 inches of snow around Dec 3. Sure, it's a record, but not the kind you want unless you are a ski area.

“That hit the Northeast”...Some portions got more than others.

In fact, it is raining and the snow has melted about 2 hours to the west.

Also, the OP put that statement in context when they mentioned the few parts of the area they went to.

Albany got hit by 22 inches of snow at the start of December. Wonder when the first measurable snowfall was this year - may be October and the last will likely be April. 6 months of possible snowfall. Enjoy.

Apparently, Albany will get 3-6 inches of snow on Tuesday and single digit lows from Wednesday to Sunday if Accuweather is to be believed.

Syracuse, which averages quite a bit more snow than the Albany area due to lake effect from Lake Ontario doesn’t usually see snow from October to April, let alone the Albany area.

Also, given that the OP is from Central IL, snow wouldn’t be new to them.

Let's explain to the OP the brutal Minnesota winter cold rather than feeling smug that Syracuse has it incrementally worse.
