Asking this question to those of you who have lived in or around Albany for a long time. In your opinion, which is the more desirable side of the Albany area? The east, as in Renssalaer-East Greenbush area or the west-as in Delmar and surrounding parts? Not interested in North, such as Troy, Schenectady, or such. Just the areas along side of Albany. I thought I was hooked on the Delmar area, but then the shopping on the other side (Rt 4) is all pretty convenient and nice
I am more interested in availability of condos or town homes to buy with reasonable pricing. I am retired so job opportunities don't matter. Am interested in nearby places to walk for exercise such as trails or parks and decent shopping mostly. So which do you think is preferable, east or west of the city? I grew up on the east side of the river but more south. The last 30 or so years have been spent living on the west side of the river, which I do prefer down there. But I'm unsure of how it is up there?

I live in Altamont/Guilderland. I really like it. I've never felt threatened/nervous about living here and to be honest it's pretty rural with good shopping within 10-15 minutes. We have major stores, two malls nearby, etc. Guilderland has good city parks, there's a few county parks I know of, and Thacher State Park is roughly 20 minutes and it's beautiful. I've never looked at homes for sale in the area, but I know there are plenty of town homes available, just not sure of the prices really.
East Greenbush is probably the best kept secret in the Albany area. I'm 48, born and raised in Albany. I moved to E.G. 20 years ago, rented an apartment at first. Loved it on this side of the river so much that when I decided to buy a house I knew exactly where I wanted to be.
I like that it's so close to Albany, so you still have everything around when you need it, but it feels miles away once you go home. Crime is basically non existent of course, and traffic is light for the most part. Route 4 can get kind of jammed up, but nothing like some other roads in the region. I'm on the 9&20 side anyway, and that never really gets backed up. I could never do the Northway or Central Ave. everyday.

Taxes are reasonable
Why do you think that East Greenbush isn’t mentioned as much as some of the other area suburbs like Niskayuna, Clifton Park, Guilderland, Bethlehem and the North Colonie SD?

If you are staying in the area, may be consider Saratoga Springs Wilton Queensbury Glens Falls. Costs are lower and more nature.
I love the East Greenbush area. People are friendly, plenty of places to shop, eat and visit.
If I was younger and could afford it, I'd move there. EG is a treasure.

I honestly think it's because depending on where you are in the town, you'll have a Rensselaer mailing address.
Does Greenbush or East Greenbush actually have a town center? What about Defreestville? I've only been on Rt 9 and Rt 4 so haven't seen any neighborhoods or town centers.
No, I don't think there is an actual town center in they way you mean, it's definitely car based. There are parks close to all the neighborhoods, and you have Hampton Lake with walking paths as well as the new bike path. It's really the perfect place for a totally electric car and an electric motorcycle for summer.
There is plenty of nature around with an easy drive from your home on the east side as well. I prefer to go southeast into the Berkshires, but you can also go south to Hudson and cross the bridge to go west into the Catskills. Both places offer plenty to do year around, and it's a nice easy drive unlike going north.
Overall, I think east of the Hudson is the best place to live in the whole Capital District.
mycatz - do you make a decision and is it working for you? thanks
