Albany-Schenectady-Troy grew across all 4 counties in the metro area. Saratoga County grew by 15,902 in the 2010 to 2020 period according to the US Census. Albany County grew by 10,644 people. Schenectady County grew by 3,334 and Rensselaer county grew by 1,701 people. This means the metro area grew by about 30,000 people in that decade.

I believe this also means that this metro has never had a population loss and is less than 100,000 from having a million residents.

Census data was as of April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, which leads me to question accuracy. I know of 8 people that moved out of NY after the census, which makes me wonder how the voting will work out, i.e. blue people moving into red state or the opposite.

While this may be the case, there is also the aspect of the area showing growth in estimates through the past decade and the pandemic may have caused an undercount in parts of the metro area as well.

I also believe that the metro area has never had a population loss in an official census.

The next census will tell a very different story.

According to what? The metro area has been growing for decades. Look at total population on the left: https://s4.ad.brown.edu/projects/div...?metroid=10580

Just to add it up the 2020 census results...

Albany County had 314,848 people

Saratoga County had 235,509 people

Schenectady County had 158,061 people

Rensselaer County had 161,130 people

Correction, I just realized that Schoharie County is actually in the MSA and did lose 3,035 people. It comes in at 29,714 people in the 2020 census.

Overall, the metro area gained just under 30,000 people, as it was at 899,262 for the 2020 census.

That's not going to happen, look at old pictures of the old Union Station when it was in use. Everyone complains about 787 cutting off the riverfront, but it was all railroad before that. They way things are set up now won't work well with a station in Albany itself. It would involve reverse moves to go south and the actual trains would still be stored in Rensselaer. So multiple repositioning moves back and forth across the river as well.

The current station is fine. I think a case could be made to make it more pedestrian friendly. I liked the cable car idea that was floating around a few years ago.
