Comparing buses vs. light rail in this
city is nothing short of ludicrous.
I don't think so.
Light rail *IS* a bus. It's a bus with shiny metal
tires and a hyperexpensive shiny metal road. It's also
a technologically inferior bus with much less flexibility.
I would not say that Light Rail IS a bus, or too much like a bus, but comparing the two is important in determining which is best for the city and its future. Until a light rail proposal is made that makes sense, I'm gonna have to support expanding Rapid Ride more than light rail… There's portions of the city that would love to have Rapid Ride, and portions of the city that would like to have basic bus service. As far as full-blown lightrail as i know it, there hasn't even been a proposal for it. The only proposal we've had so far is for a streetcar… Of which I really don't think I can support at all.
Unfortunately, these three terms, and bus.. don't have any well-accepted definitions or distinguishing characteristics.
What would you call a train without an operator (at least in the cab)?
No one's mentioned elecbuses or capbuses (which I think are pretty cool).
Also, no one's mentioned narrow gauge options.
What people like Mortimer need to realize is that if you get a good, conventional BRT system going, and put a sign like "streetcar" on the side, it will make 90% of the forum in favor of streetcars in favor of it. They'll even call it a streetcar.
Intellectually dishonest? Perhaps.. but then again, half of GM's "hybrid" vehicles aren't technically hybrids, and still they sell well (well, for GM vehicles, anyway).

Why do you need one? Everyone knows a train when the see one. The
same goes for a bus. What I want someone to tell me is what can a
train do that a bus can't in the context of urban/suburban mass transit.
That is the question I posed. I did not ask for anyone to give a definition.

"People like Mortimer?" What's that supposed to mean? I'll just have
to assume that you meant it in the complimentary way possible.
Besides, just exactly who on here is like mortimer?
What makes you think I don't realize what you said?

Not train.. streetcar vs. light rail vs. monorail.. ask people multiple choice on 10 pictures and you'll get a wide variety of responses.

Since you didn't start the thread, maybe we can talk about other things than what you specifically had in mind if we like.

In terms of opposing the ABQ deployment of the three eponymous things that make this thread's title, people like Mike H, JBM, and me, I suppose.

Sorry. I use "train" as a generic term for a rail-riding vehicle.
Technically, I guess, a "train" is something where many like "cars"
are connected together in a "train" and one "car," does not make
a train. I will be more careful in the future.

Sorry again.
I thought you were saying that someone could not tell me how a light
rail was different than a bus due to the lack of a standard definition.
Since the original topiic IS "which is best?" I assume you are
OK with me wanting to know how any railed vehicle is different than a bus
for the purposes of "the best option for future transit in Albuquerque."

OK. So, at least I got that right.
You mean that [ Mike H, JBM, and you ] are "like mortimer"
