Hi,
I'm a modern dancer that is thinking of relocating to Albuquerque to do graduate studies. I hope other dancers read this forum because I'd like to know what the dance community is like in your town. I live in California-the Bay Area and it can be pretty stuck up here......are there many studios to dance? Is there work teaching in schools? I've been teaching kids and teens mostly and hope to get a part-time job if I need one........peace and love......dreamdans6
p.s. is housing hard to find?

Well I'm not a professional dancer (nor a youngster since I'm in my 40's) but the University of New Mexico does have a very big degreed dance program and Albuquerque is home to the International Flamenco Institute. There are lots of dance studios in town and lots of dance classes everywhere at studios and at most of the health clubs in town and at some recreation centers too. And I'm not talking just standard aerobics or jazzercise. I take hip hop and salsa classes and we learn steps and choreography. I also belly dance and was part of an amateur troop here. There is a big belly dance community in Albuquerque.

In general Albuquerque and Santa Fe are very supportive of the arts, including dance. One of the things I do like about the the area is that creativity abounds.

As "LLD" has said, the University of New Mexico has a nationally recognized Performance Arts department. My niece, who is just starting at UNM, is interested in Drama for instance.

There are 19 "Dance Companies" in the city. (I'm walking through our Yellow Pages.) ;-) 32 "Dance Instruction" businesses...these cover everything from tap, ballet, to the Texas Two Step!

Check out this "official" City of Albuquerque site, which I found by entering simply "Dance."

Search Results: dance

I'm sure 75% may not be applicable to your needs, but something might be relevant. Good luck! P.S. Sometimes these "extended" web pages don't work, so you can just use the Albuquerque - Official City Website site and Search for "Dance" as I did.

FYI...dreamdans6

UNM Dept. of Theater & Dance:
University of New Mexico: Theatre & Dance Department: Academics: Design for Performance

You asked about "housing," and I don't know if that means apartments, or houses. Either is readily available, and God knows priced well below anywhere in the Bay Area...especially San Francisco. Or do live in the worst part of Oakland? :-) Adios!

thanks everyone for your help......Albuquerque sounds like a great place to move to.....since I'm applying to different graduate programs, nothing is definite, do you have any opinions about living in Tempe or Tucson, since they are both a possibility for my graduate studies......peace out......dreamdans6

Middle-eastern dance is popular in Albuquerque. I believe there are more than a couple of studios in town; there is a studio on my street in fact. Lots of drummers, too. I can't vouch for how "professional" that scene is though. As mentioned above LLD and nm_photojournalist there is no shortage of dance in general out here

If you want a cottage or a duplex and are interested in the arts scene I recommend the UNM area (I live here myself). Plenty of character/older houses, options and proximity to the university of course.

I don't recommend Tucson or Tempe, but I'm biased and I like to go barefoot in the summer without frying the soles of my feet.

Good luck with your decision. I can tell by your syntax you'll fit in in Albuquerque
