This will be my first Balloon Fest and looking forward to it!
I wanted to comment on one of Mortimer's wonderful and thoughtful suggestions:

4) I don't know if The Sandia Resort and Casino's Bien Shur restaurant will be openor allow gawkers, but it would be a great location with the added benefit of an open air 8-story deck to watch from. This is several hundred yards N. of (2) above. If you can get a good breakfast there, this location is a winner.
I just contacted the Rooftop Restaurant ---- and no, unfortunately, they will not be opening their doors early during Balloon Fest. OH well... now THAT would have been a cool alternative! Don't mark my words, in case someone else decides otherwise... Sooo.. I would call them to find out...
If the balloons head west, Alameda Open Space is a good place to head to. The area isn't that big, but a lot will try landing in that parking lot to the Bosque Trail and if you take a bike, you can capture pictures of them touching down in the water (if they drift that way).

Many try to fly along the Rio Grande, not land in it, but do a splash and go. Not many actually land at the Alameda Open Space, they will typically continue West and Southwest from there, were there are a lot of clear landing spots (Alameda has a lot of power lines and other problems) but it depends on the wind. I have also seen them go North as well as South along the Rio Grande over the years.
Many pilots who are registered for Balloon Fiesta sign up to participate in Albuquerque Aloft. Pilots launch their balloons from selected school grounds in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho on the Friday morning before Balloon Fiesta.
Thanks for passing this info! We will be there for the whole week to do some photography with the balloons on both morning and evening flights. So we would need at least 20 general admission tickets!
Thanks again.

Thanks also to Poncho for taking some pics of fields with a view of the balloon flight! Thats valuable info for photographer trying to scout good location for a nice capture of the overall balloon festivities.
Albuquerque Aloft, Friday, October 1st, 2010. "Albuquerque Aloft" was enjoyed by kids across 50+ schools in the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho area. The event which was started in 1990 by Balloon Pilots launch or tether their balloons from the selected school grounds on the Friday morning before Balloon Fiesta and has grown tremendously. The event gives kids an up close look at what it takes to get a balloon off the ground. This video was taken at the Enchanted Hills Elementary School in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
My wife took these this morning while we were riding around. All except the last four were on Paseo Del Norte and
Jefferson area. We then went North on San Pedro to the end, a few good spots for photos's. Then West on Roy Ave
where she took the last four photo's.
If you just want to see sheer numbers of balloons, all those places were good. There were a lot of balloons which did
not look all cluttered with power lines in the way. That was just her style at the moment. We took 300+ photo's and
some video, just have not looked at them all yet.
