I moved here from central PA two years ago. I DO NOT MISS THE MOSQUITOES! I see several comments on roaches. I've seen a couple at work but never any at home. I live in Northern Rio Rancho about 35 minutes from downtown Albuquerque. The further you live from the Rio Grande and the trees that line the river, the fewer the mosquitoes. I sit on my patio every night and have never been bitten.

We do have black widow spiders. I have seen three in two years. I have only seen one scorpion and it was dead.
Also, my wife and I ride motorcycles. We would never go for rides in the early evening back in PA because of the bugs. Here, we enjoy evening rides.
The only other creepy bug we have are the giant centipedes. I have seen one in two years. My wife had yet to see one. I see quite a few ants outside but have yet to have any in the house.

FYI. Rio Rancho Schools have good ratings.

Oh, yeah. Don't forget the Black Widows.

I think that there are fewer roaches in places like RR because the plumbing is newer. In about ten years as the leaks start and there is more ambient moisture under your house they will come... Oh, yes... they will come. Mu hu ah ah ah ah ah.

Hi, I am a transplant from upstate NY, too (Newburgh) and have lived in Albuquerque for 11 years. Roaches seem to be everywhere, but some neighborhoods seem to have them worse than others. We used to live a little more than a mile from UNM and had tons of them, now we live 2 miles from UNM (further south) and don't have them. I think it also depends on how much pest control your apartment complex does.

We have some friends in Rio Rancho and have house-sat for them. A baby scorpion came running into the bathroom one time and on our last house-sitting gig, there was a centipede right outside the bathroom door (those things give you the willies).

In our current apartment we have all different kinds of spiders, which I promptly toss outside. Beware of the solfugid, also common here, lurking in your kitchen cabinets, but harmless as long as you don't mess with them (very creepy looking).

Moving here from the northeast, I have to say that this part of the country generally has the most interesting (and disgusting) bugs I have ever seen.

Hi. We moved to the NE HEights about 1 1/2 yrs ago from MD and overall find the area very bug-free. Mostly the occasional spider, and ants, lots of ants. Especially when it gets dry and they come looking for water. We use the ant traps with borax which work pretty well. Also black widow spiders in the garage only. We have a two yr old daughter who likes to explore, so about 1-2 times/summer we use a dry fogger which does the trick. But otherwise very pleasant and NO mosquitos. p.s. If you're planning to rent [whick Ikinda wish we would've done I would really recommend La Ventana apts way up in the heights - nice place, good schools and well-kept.

Geez. I hate spiders. I may have to rethink ABQ.

As long as you don't mess with them??? EWWWWW!!! If I find one of those horrible things in my kitchen cabinets....or anywhere in the house, I will attempt to kill it in any way possible.

Centipedes and scorpions...yep, been there, done that.

Well think of it this way, a spider is about the size of a dime. That is a lot easier to handle than a lot of bigger, juicier, more disgusting bugs. Besides, everywhere has spiders.

I should have known not to click on the solfugid link, but nooooooo, I did it anyway. EEEWWWW! Now I'm going to imagine creepy crawlies every time the cat brushes my feet tonight. Looks like an albino mutant spider.
