Downtown is filled with cheap bars and strip club joints. That place turns into a riot at night. And in the day, it is an eye soar, the homeless lurk everywhere and buildings, streets and such could use improvement. There is nowhere to shop, and enjoy a nice dinner unless you would like to eat tucanos every week which gets old.
I don't dare let my children near that area, until it improves. Nuff' said. If you work in Downtown you have NO choice but to go in the area.
There's only one "strip joint" downtown and many of the "cheap bars" you mention are also music venues that draw and promote many genres of local as well as out of town musical talent. There's also The El Rey, The Sunshine Theater,The Kimo Theater and a new all ages music venue called Amped that just opened up a few months ago and is thriving down there as well. The bars that don't have live music are not dingy, derelict bars at all. In fact they're patronized by lively, exuberant crowds of many ranges of age, culture and styles.
As for the homeless, yes there's some scattered here and there but compared to other large cities, the number is small. Sure some of the buildings and streets can use improvement but it's not that drastic at this time.
Im aware that it can get rowdy occasionally now and then but it's rarely a "riot" as you call it and there's usually a pretty strong police presence on weekends and enough a presence on weeknights, depending on what kind of events are happening, on weeknights as well.
I totally agree with the last couple comments about downtown. It is one of the nicer areas of the city to walk around and has a ton of potential.
One thing I'm curious about is why there are more votes for Tougher DWI/Crime laws than there are for Comprehensive attack on DWI's. Comprehensive meaning it would couple stricter laws with preventative measures as well. Thinking that simply making "tougher laws" seems to be a little short-sighted and assumes that people's motives for committing crimes is simply because the laws aren't tough enough.

Sounds like you haven't visited DownTown in a very long time. There is exactly 1 Strip Club in DT. 1. There are several higher end bars also like One Up, JazzBah, Ibiza, Apothecary at Hotel Parq Central and a couple of good breweries. There are several good restaurants besides Tucano's. Slate Street, Forque, Artichoke Cafe, P'Tit Louis, Lucia, Standard Diner, Farina, BrGr, Holy Cow, The Grove, Amer-Asia, Pasion and a few others I'm probably missing.

Actually I do have a choice. I could also work at our offices near Candelaria and I/25 or seek employment elsewhere.
