This may be an odd sounding question, but I find it really difficult to find acceptable kaiser rolls here. Any suggestions?
If you have never had the luxury of walking into a Wawa and picking up an Amoroso kaiser roll or two (or more generally, if you haven't spent much time on the east coast), you may not know what I'm looking for.
Pretty good, and not even the best obviously. Although I noticed there was some controversy over in the Philadelphia forum about how Wawa was now making its rolls in-house (but still sourced from Amoroso, I think) and they aren't as good as it was when they got it ready made from Amoroso, directly.
I don't know specifically about kaiser rolls, but Fano bakery is by far my favorite local bakery. They do a lot of different things so I'd at least check with them.
Incidentally, even though I mentioned Amoroso's Kaiser rolls, they are actually Austrian in origin, but given Pennsylvania history (and demographics over the years) I guess it makes perfect sense to have an Italian bakery making an Austrian/German bread.
Kaiser rolls were also my mom's preferred hamburger buns, especially with poppy seeds on top.
I agree that the kaiser rolls in the Philly area were really quite good and have yet to find anything similar here. They do make for great burger rolls; and I also agree with the poppy seeded ones.
Wawa hoagies were not the best but you could go there in the middle of the night to get one or most other kinds of sandwiches. We're missing that out here. My son and I were actually kidding around about opening a Wawa out here.
