I think you will face a certain amount of homophobia in the areas of Albuquerque that are largely populated by Mexican immigrants, and, possibly in some of the older neighborhoods like Duranes, Barelas, etc., where there's a strong drug retail base. The most gay-friendly areas are in the Nob Hill/University area, the North Valley, and maybe Corrales, unfortunately, they are also significantly more expensive areas of the city. There are occasionally deals to be found however in the area around Lomas close to the UNM Law School golf course. That's a very gay-friendly, vibrant area.
As for schools, it's well worth it to check out the charter schools in town. I've heard good things about Amy Biehl and the classical charter school.
