I'm currently considering leaving Oklahoma and moving to NM because I grew up in AZ and have always missed the desert. It's just me (55yo male) so no concerns about schools or family type stuff.

Tentative requirements so far.

1)Decent broadband speeds (say 300MB or higher although GB would be preferred) because I work 100% remote.

2) While not set in stone, I'm leaning towards the ABQ area because of the VA hospital. I rarely use VA facilities, but I do prefer to have them nearby just in case.

3) Fairly moderate climate. I grew up in AZ so can stand the heat, but don't love it. I'm also not a huge fan of snow. Some is fine, snowed in for days at a time isn't. Granted this isn't really a dealbreaker unless the snowfall kills the internet connection.

4) Housing budget in the $200-$300K range preferably. I could go higher (I make ~$150K/year and have zero debt) but would prefer not to spend it all on housing. Granted, this is probably irrelevant since I will most likely rent for the first 6 months while I get a feel for the area anyway. However, it would give me a starting point once I get there and start looking.

5) Prefer places where people don't make their life about politics. Everyone I talk to in Oklahoma seems to be either wearing a MAGA hat or talking about how Trump needs to go to jail. I'm tired of trying to avoid those types of conversations.

6) Prefer someplace at least a little bit welcoming. Hoping to not always be "that new guy" because I wasn't born in the area.

7) I'm not much of an off-grid type of guy but a little distance from the city center would be nice. However, if it comes down to it, I'm ok with driving a bit to get my outdoor fix.

Other than that, I'm pretty open to just about anything. Would anyone please give me a few areas or towns to look at?

I've heard the housing market is cooling so don't jump yet. I'd rent till you get to know the place. With that income level you should get a nice place.
