I will be in Albuquerque in just a few weeks. I will be staying at an Extended Stay America for a couple of weeks to look for an apartment. The Extended Stay Suite comes with a little kitchenette. I am hoping to get some recommendations for Grocery Stores you may shop at. Please comment on the reason you present your recommendation whether it be competitive prices or good departments, i.e. meat, produce, deli, etc.

Thanks

Cool Tons of grocery stores

The grocery chains in ABQ are Albertson's & Smith's (AKA Kroger). In addition Walmart and Target stores here carry groceries. There are some independents and a couple of butchers also.

There are 3-4 Sprouts in town, which are good for produce and some baked goods, as well as some speciality items. There are two Trader Joe's in town. If you been to one ...

I think Albertson's has better meats than Smith's but Smith's has better baked goods (like green chile bagels). Albertson's also has a nice selection of NM products - salsas and sauces, coffee, cookies, etc. My general preference is Albertson's.

Thanks for your replies, I am familiar with Albertsons as I used to live in Washington State 12 years ago.

If you are staying near the Sunport, there's a Smith's off of Yale at Coal (small and a bit sketchy), and a Sprouts at Lomas west of San Mateo. Whole Foods at Carlisle and Indian School has more organics. The Walmart at Zuni and San Mateo is very sketchy.

La Montañita Coop in Nob Hill at Central and Carlisle will carry some local produce, and has a lot of vegan and gluten-free products. Very limited meat and fish selection.

If you're staying where I think you are Whole Foods is right down the street. If I were single I may considering staying there for a while since rents are going thru the roof. All utilities paid, right?

I like La Montanita Co-op. They have the widest selection of produce of anyone in town, and it's very fresh. They have the most attractive displays of any store in town. Check out their deli department if your there anytime near the lunch hour. It's a small department compared to the branch in Santa Fe, but they have good cooks and good recipes, if you want a hot meal, or a variety of salads ready for take-out.

2400 Rio Grande Blvd. NW
Albuquerque, NM 87104

They're pricey, but soups are made on-site, rather then purchased from a bulk provider and trucked in, like all the other stores do. The quality and selection of the produce are worth the price.

Yes, the Extended Stay of America has a little kitchen in the suite, all utilities included in your stay along with wifi, breakfast in the morning, and a desk where I can do my online searches on my laptop.
